Have a friend who has self esteem issues and is unemployed. Shes an artist and has a weird relationship with her parents. I know she hates her mother but I cant work out if her relationship with her dad is good bad or complicated. I dont know about it. She has at least postured about how disgusting nfts are. Her dad asked her to make 5 nfts a couple of months ago and she did.

She kept quiet about it though, I only knew because of her bf who also thinks they are gross.

I was super disappointed, still am. I know she said she feels like she has no excuse or anything to say when her father asks about finding work, so she felt pressured. She's not in a good place mentally, and I understand her issues with being unable to look for work.

Please no replies jumping to the conclusion that the dad is manipulative or emotionally abusive. In all likelihood he just asked her and she didn't have the backbone to say no to her dad and her self esteem issues made her want to escape the work topic. Her dad likely didnt understand and is probably oblivious.

I feel bad for her but I'm also upset with her.

So nft is a unique item with real life value? I assume no one cares for those in single player games so ffxiv does indeed seem where they would put it in

I remember when even sub fees were considered too much and greedy. I don't mind paying for a good product but goddamn if game companies arent trying to leech you at every turn nowdays. You pay for the base game, monthly sub fees, expansions, the games have store only bought items, wanna change race or name? Pay again. They start to feel like beggars 🤣 And if they absolutely have to be greedy then I'd much prefer to have a higher sub fee and having everything else free for example. One can hope but I'd bet we'll only be going downhill with these things

Yea…😬 konami did the castlevania gif nft auction not long ago with a fine print stating explicitly you do not own the intellectual property in case it eludes anyone. So then it begs to question what is the point other than pump and dumping said gifs 🤔 worst is they love to shelve that franchise

I dont want to talk about the environment aspect considering the amount of servers we run around the world and the racks getting replaced which ends up in landfills or 3rd world countries to be strip of metals

So after the first mmo game that square soft made and is the greatest mmo's that was made from the square franchise. Square enix has been slowly moving away the idea of gaming. Lazy people saying that the games to hard. Thank you people for taking 14 down this path.

Even if I earn any NFTs in a game I'm not going to sell them and most likely delete them. Have you seen the items Ubisoft have made into NFTs? Uninteresting and uninspiring. I would delete that shit right away.

If they want to keep them in phone games for the whales its w/e if it reduces the transaction stuff and phases out things like etherium if it only takes the same as doing a trade on an MMO + a transaction connection via paypal which all companies do already. Thats literally the ONLY good thing that can come from this; but the bad outweighs the good by 10 fold.

according to nasa, the hole in the ozone is healing. i think this is due to efforts that have been made since 1989 to mitigate energy consumption. this, plus crypto, could undo 33 years of efforts, all for nerds who think they can make online a reality.

That makes no sense. Digital currency dont use energy besides devices your already using. Stop using your credit card on amazon then! But overall nft's sound like scamming. And with the electric bs sounds like more money laundering.

You misunderstood blockchain a bit. All this costs so much since you can mine currency on the current chains. If you can't do that (but in example a token is generated for only for a real purchase in real life money), it's not bad or inefficient at all.

That said, NFTs are still a bubble and bad for players, but the environmental issue is the implementation and possiblity to mine currency. There must not be such a possibility given on a network. Well – they currently do that on networks which allow that, which was the next-stupid thing to do.

If anything, they could put the XIV item database on a superfast purpose-built blockchain and that would technically make each item an NFT. Or, they could put the existing store items on a public blockchain and make them transferrable. Why wouldn't that be an improvement?

Also there are blockchains which are not sustained by mining (proof-of-work), like BSC or Avalanche, Polkadot, Cardano, Cronus, Solana, Fantom.. okay you know what the vast majority even are NOT energy-intensive mined chains.

The 'cost-per-transaction' thing is kind of a misnomer too, the energy consumption doesn't literally increase or decrease based on transaction volume. Especially if you're running on Sol or BSC or AVAX or any PoS chain. Remember to compare the energy consumption of the 'official/legacy' financial system to that of the PoW-backed financial system~

Also why should governments have a monopoly on currency generation, again? Does inflation benefit us individuals? Are they being responsible with their management of the value of the $? Why isn't fiat currency a pyramid scheme if they can just create/borrow it at will?

I don't see how the first-gen implementation of NFT's (the 'license to an image file' type stuff), can be the kind of thing that benefits gaming. I could see, like, your FFXIV character following you around as a 'pet' or something in a VRchat game, lol

That 'inevitability feeling' is probably because the WEF is pushing blockchain tech for CBDC's and proof-of-stake blockchains are going to be preferred by corporations doing the ESG stuff.

    >"ESG is the acronym for Environmental, Social, and (Corporate) Governance, the three broad categories, or areas, of interest for what is termed “socially responsible investors.” They are investors who consider it important to incorporate their values and concerns (such as environmental concerns) into their selection of investments instead of simply considering the potential profitability and/or risk presented by an investment opportunity."

Ethereum 2.0 which relies of Proof Of Stake vs Proof Of Work is expected to launch in Summer 2022, so the majority of the Environmental concerns will be out of the way.

That's being said NFT's really seem to be a fad and as they come to games I think it'll be absolutely predatory and gross.

I don't think a single NFT enthusiast is there to "contribute," they're there to make money without having to work for it.

I definitely agree NFTs are absurd. But, the only thing that can stop it is if the consumer base doesn’t buy it. That is the beautiful power of capitalism… just adhere to your principles, do what you say you will do and don’t lie. Then NFTs will not survive. Lie to yourself and lie to others and NFTs will become a huge market. Capitalism is only as corrupt as YOU make it.

As for destroying the planet… sorry but Earth has a cycle of wiping out all surface life. This isn’t anything new and it was already going to happen. The only thing humans are guilty of is speeding it up, not causing it. Earth will survive humans just fine. Stop talking about “destroying the planet”. What you’re really wanting to discuss is destroying surface life on the planet, more specifically humans. And potentially marine life? 🤷🏻‍♂️ But Earth will be just fine. It is human arrogance to believe you can “stop climate change.” You can slow it down or speed it up, sure. But you aren’t going to stop it. Best thing to do is figure out how to roll with the punches or leave.

But I’m NOT saying we shouldn’t care about the environment. I’m just pointing out the flawed perception on the topic. Having cleaner air is certainly better. But for whom? For humans. This is rightfully a selfish argument. Because if you’re concerned for the little bunnies on the planet… sorry but they’re going to be wiped out. Now or later…. Focus on what you have some modicum of control over and do the best you can everywhere else.

Honestly seems like a bunch of buzzwords to make investors happy. It wouldn't surprise me if they did little in regards to NFTs.

Here's the problem: When players buy "add-on" content from online shops, inevitably a company will see something like NFTs as profitable because inevitably there's going to be enough people in a pop of 25+ Million that buy them and make the company a decent chunk of money.

If you've EVER bought a DLC, a skin, a battle pass, ANYTHING from any game ever following this model, YOU are responsible for stuff like this continuing to happen.

The way I understood NFTs is.. you are only buying a record of ownership and nothing more. well in the case of FFXIV, it would be like being able to purchase a stake of ownership of Shaggles. You couldn't take him home with you or do much of anything with him, except show proof that you own him or whatever portion of him. You aren't buying the thing, you are just buying ownership stake of the thing. You don't even own any rights of thing.

I don't see how that would work in games as each thing needs to be unique (or else isn't an NFT). Wouldn't it be inefficient to design one item for sale that only one person can buy vs an item that thousands of people can buy? I guess they could sell ownership of various in game things that already exist but then that doesn't impact gameplay since it's only proof of ownership and not the right to actually do anything with those things or change them. Or like.. a +5 sword of awesomeness might show that Joe Cool owns the sword design but everyone can still loot and use the sword.

It's basically cyrptocurrency except where each "coin" is a unique item. All I can do with an NFT is show that I own it, or trade/sell it.

If NFTs have you scratching your head because no one can articulate the concept well enough to get the average player onboard, you are not alone. This is the "PONZI" scheme of the century. If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, it's a f'n duck! BTW, if you are literally worried about the climate and environment to the extent you seem to be fearful of, you need to get out and see/experience the world through your own two eyes vs. staying in one place and getting your data second-hand.
